Map of Greenwich

About Greenwich - From The Greenwich Chamber of Commerce

Founded in 1640, Greenwich, known as the Gateway to New England, is within an hour of New York City and major airports. Nearly 50 square miles, with a population of 62,000, it includes the community neighborhoods of Banksville, Byram, Cos Cob, Glenville, Old Greenwich, and Riverside (The Communities Of Greenwich, CT), as well as the areas of Central and North Greenwich. From its Long Island Sound southern boundary, north through the in-town neighborhoods and on to the 2 and 4 acre zones of mid and back country the terrain moves from the level water edged properties to wooded hills and rolling meadows. The same school system and town government (Town of Greenwich) serve all residents. A respected community institution, the Greenwich Hospital, a member of the Yale New Haven Health System, has a known reputation for its facilities and caring patient services.

Keeping the "green" in Greenwich, the town offers more than 4,000 acres of parks, preserves and playgrounds (Greenwich Parks). Available to all residents are tennis courts, a golf course, the Dorothy Hamill ice skating rink and a skate park. Dotting the thirty-two miles of shoreline are the many town boating facilities and four sandy beaches (Greenwich Beaches), two of which are islands reached by ferry. Also within the area are a number of private golf and yacht clubs. Weaving throughout the backcountry are 150 miles of trails managed by the Riding & Trails Association.

The Greenwich libraries at their four locations present a vast collection of print and non-print material and a foremost business library (Greenwich Library System). The Bruce Museum of Arts and Science, with its rotating and permanent exhibits, is accredited by the American Association of Museums. There is a long established Art Society and Greenwich Arts Council. The Choral Society and the Symphony Orchestra with nearby professional theater contribute to a rich cultural atmosphere.

Greenwich public schools have a history of educational excellence (Greenwich Public Schools). The system includes one high school, three middle schools and eleven elementary schools. For those who choose private education, there are top rated day schools for girls or boys or co-educational (About Our Schools). Activities for children and teens include the full gamut of active sports and enrichment programs. The YMCA, the YWCA, Boys' and Girls' Club and a Teen Center are just some of the places that provide a well-rounded schedule.

Greenwich Avenue and adjacent streets are a focus for shopping and services, as well as, each neighborhood offering its own local amenities. The town restaurants with diverse cuisines, styles and settings present opportunities to dine from easy to elegant.

Greenwich, Connecticut, while allowing a cosmopolitan life-style, still retains the feeling of a friendly New England town.
